SURFACE PATTERN DESIGN

Designing From Observation

My surface pattern work grows out of noticing - colour relationships, natural forms, fragments of pattern, and the small details that often get overlooked.

This strand of my practice sits alongside quilting and teaching, informed by the same interests in repetition, rhythm, and how pattern lives on a surface.

Some designs begin as drawings, others as digital explorations, but all are shaped slowly, with use and context in mind.

A Quieter Strand of the Studio

Surface design is a newer part of my practice, and one I’m enjoying growing into. I’m building a body of work gradually - learning through doing, exploring what feels right, and allowing patterns to develop over time.

This work connects naturally with the way I think about quilting in thread, extending those ideas onto fabric and other surfaces. I’m drawn to stationery and wrapping paper as much as cloth, and I find myself influenced by mid-century design - its colour, structure, and sense of considered repetition.

It’s an area I’m excited to spend more time with, and one I’m continuing to develop as the work unfolds.

I share occasional reflections on this process in my studio notes, alongside quilting and design thinking more broadly.
